How to Stay Motivated as a Real Estate Agent

As a real estate agent, you encounter a lot of disappointment and you’re turned away many times. Even the most thick-skinned agents will have their down days -- they’ll feel down, empty, spent, or just downright tired from always having to push. Always having to be the person who goes on when others stop.

Once you become a real estate broker, you face the entire range of emotions again -- but then they’re likely to be 1000 times more intense.

When you’re starting to feel like might want to get out of the real estate business, keep going! To help you along, here’s three strategies to help you stay motivated, even when the chips are down:

Let the waves guide you -- and be prepared for a downturn

Not everyone can cope with the ups and downs that come with the territory.

It takes much less energy to surf the waves than to fight them. So if you’re on a high now, be mentally prepared for the local real estate market going sour on you. It takes a lot of effort to build up that resilience. But, you’ll find it’s totally worth it once you see the market turning in favor -- and you’re still in business with your sanity intact!

So get yourself a surfboard and ride those real estate waves (not literally of course -- unless that’s your thing!).

Learn to deal with rejection

Another thing that’s going to happen -- regardless of how well you’re doing -- is rejection.

As a real estate professional, you need to face rejection every day -- sometimes multiple times.

You know rejection will happen. The good news is you can train yourself how to deal with it -- how to mentally overcome rejection every time. To do this, you’ll need to train your ‘rejection muscle’ -- the more you do it, the better you get.

So find out what works for you -- some blow off steam by exercising, making music, doing stand up comedy or finding inner peace by meditating.

Another strategy is to try Rejection Therapy. This means actively finding ways to get rejected once a day for 100 days.

Now, we’re not saying you have to take it this far, but any work you do on working with rejection will make your life MUCH easier.

This is important, because 87% of real estate agents fail in the first 5 years of business. And many fail because they don’t handle rejection very well.

Try out new things

To keep your mind agile and fresh, it’s important to try out new things on a regular basis. Something new can come in the form of a new hobby or leisure activity.

But, a more powerful form of experimentation is to change something about your business.

Start with small changes, like exploring a new marketing channel, fine-tuning your company culture, or changing the way you recruit agents. Challenge yourself to make the change bigger an bigger.

Set a goal to make a big change happen at least once every quarter. This shouldn’t be change for the sake of it, but something that really makes your business better.

Incremental change is great, but to succeed -- and stay motivated -- you want to go big.
